The native food of Costa Rica is refered to as "Comida Tipica" translated as "typical food". It consists of rice, beans, plantains and a choice of chicken, fish or pork. Little family-owned restaurants are common along the country highways and make wonderful places to try out the local cuisine.

A "soda" is the Costa Rican term for a roadside store or snack bar. Some have full hot meals and others have candy, beverages and coffee.

Fruit stands are common along the country roads and a good place to stop for local fruit including coconut milk. It is safe to eat fresh fruit in Costa Rica.
